What is GEMS?

GEMS stands for Global Education Model of Schooling which is based on the idea that individuals do their best when they learn to compete with their own selves. GEMS is a new evaluation system combined with a peronalized set of materials to help each student succeed.

An Objective Asssessment Tool to Measure Competition with Oneself

There are only a few objective evaluation tools available for demonstrating progress against oneself. Most evaluation systems focus on competition with others which do not serve all children well – those at the top of a class wait for others to catch up, those at the bottom are often left behind, while others are slowed down because of the rest. Whereas, since GEMS evaluation is personalized, it helps every child feel accomplished.

A Parallel Programme

The present GEMS programme works in parallel with whole class instruction. A baseline survey is taken at the beginning of each term and a progress survey at the end of each term. It is a dynamic assessment process that is also a planning tool.

Class Analysis for Better Class Teaching Strategy

A teacher/class analysis report is generated that summarizes the concepts in which the class as a whole is good, moderate or limited, along with conceptwise performance of each student in the class. These help a teacher to fine tune his/her class strategy and help each of his/her students improve. The teacher can use the class analysis to plan which concepts to teach first and which last and how much time to spend on each, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each student and to plan for their success.

These GEMS analytical tools are helpful to any teacher in any class setting, though some class settings will allow for more attention to the individual student needs, yet all teachers –  even those in large classrooms with a strictly whole class approach – can benefit from these reports that help them fine-tune their class teaching strategy.
